"Haag Cykell" - a hand printed broadside/shadow puppet featuring Sarah Minor and Johanna Winters

A letterpress print/broadside featuring the script for "Haag Cykell" by Sarah Minor and Johanna Winters.

"Haag Cykell" is a collaborative shadow theater performance by Minor and Winters that premiered for a live audience at the Open Air Media Festival in Iowa City, June 2023, under the full Strawberry Moon. Using analog technology and chanted language, the performance prompts the audience to consider themes of isolation, invisibility, ugliness, and the history of "ululation," a vocalization of grief once considered too offensive to be heard within a city's walls, suitable only for wilderness.

Designed and hand printed by Margaret Yapp in Iowa City, Iowa on a Vandercook SP20. Edition of 40. Type is digitally set Iowan Old Style and tracings based on Sarah and Johanna’s show. 20 point cardstock, Fabriano Tiziano papers. Hands and teeth cut using a cricut.
